superstar Har Mar Superstar: A Song For Britney SpearsWhile inhabiting his Har Mar Superstar persona (think blue-eyed, ironic R&B and disco in the vein of Jamiroquai and Beck), Sean Tillmann doesn’t mind when people don’t take him seriously. After all, the Minnesota native, whose musical moniker is derived from suburban St. Paul’s decrepit Har Mar Mall, possesses — to paraphrase the words of his own publicist — the pipes of Justin Timberlake and the looks of Ron Jeremy. As Har Mar Superstar, Tillman often pays tribute to his own unshapely figure, but the narcissism apparently got a bit much for him at some point after 2004’s The Handler. In recent years, he’s branched out into other musical projects, and even appeared as a roller-derby coach in Drew Barrymore’s recent film Whip It.

Thankfully, Tillmann decided to resurrect Har Mar Superstar for his new album Dark Touches, which bears fruit in the form of silly, contagious tracks like “Tall Boy.” Originally written for Britney Spears, the song hasn’t really changed for its male perspective, although a can-opening sound effect makes it clear that Tillmann is lusting for a large beer rather than a lanky male. Otherwise, the tune is pure synth-pop and electro-cheese of the most addictive variety, right down to its video-game sound effects and giddy double entendres.
